Overview

MS Geoffrey Chaucer is a 5* river cruise ship designed for a relaxed and intimate way to explore Europe. Elegant interiors feature rich hardwoods, polished brass and a light-filled marble atrium, while just 150 guests are looked after by a crew of 44. Across four decks you'll find two dining venues, a panoramic lounge and bar, wellness and fitness facilities and an open Sun Deck with a splash pool and putting green. Spacious suites and huge windows keep the passing scenery at the heart of the experience throughout your journey, from the moment you first step onboard.

Food & Drink

On Ruby Deck, the main restaurant serves buffet breakfasts and lunches, then a four-course dinner nightly. For a more intimate option, Riverview Kitchen offers a reservable, locally inspired dinner from its open kitchen at no extra charge. Early-riser and lounge snacks are available throughout the day too.

Entertainment

Evenings are relaxed, centred on the panoramic Main Lounge and bar on Diamond Deck. Settle into armchairs for drinks as the scenery drifts by, with a resident pianist after dinner. Expect destination-focused talks and low-key entertainment, not big productions, keeping evenings easy and sociable onboard.

Accommodation

Suites span 16-17m² Standard, 23m² Superior and 25m² Deluxe Balcony. Diamond and Ruby Deck standards have floor-to-ceiling glass doors and French balconies; Emerald Deck has fixed windows. All suites have an ensuite bathroom and individually controlled air conditioning for added comfort throughout.

Pools & Outdoors

Head to the open Sun Deck to watch the scenery, with plenty of loungers and shaded seating, plus a small splash pool and a putting green. At the bow, a terrace ahead of the wheelhouse gives uninterrupted views, while Riverview Kitchen adds another open-air spot to relax and watch the river.

Spa & Fitness

On Emerald Deck you will find Geoffrey Chaucer's compact fitness centre and wellness area. Keep active in the onboard gym, or book a relaxing treatment during quieter moments. It is an intimate setup, complementing days exploring ashore rather than a destination in itself, but perfect for a little downtime.

Accommodation Options

Every suite onboard MS Geoffrey Chaucer includes individual climate control, twin beds that can be configured as a double, a Nespresso machine and tea-making facilities, an ensuite bathroom with walk-in shower, toiletries, towels, bathrobes, slippers and hairdryer, UK plug sockets and 2 USB charging points, table and chairs, telephone, radio, flat-screen TV, safe, mini-fridge and turn-down service.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything worth knowing before you book. Tap a question to read the answer.

River Cruising

How is river cruising different from ocean cruising?

River cruising is a much more intimate way to travel, with smaller ships, fewer guests and ever-changing scenery right outside the window. Instead of sailing between coastal ports, you travel through the heart of each destination, often arriving close to historic towns and city centres.

How close does the ship dock to the destinations?

One of the big advantages of river cruising is how centrally ships can often dock. In many destinations you can step ashore close to the main sights, meaning less time travelling from a large cruise terminal and more time actually exploring.

Will I feel much movement on a river cruise?

River cruising is very different from being out at sea, with no ocean swell and generally much calmer water. While movement can never be ruled out completely, many guests who are concerned about seasickness find river cruising a much gentler experience.

Is river cruising mainly aimed at older travellers?

Not at all. River cruising appeals to anyone who enjoys discovering new places, great food, culture and a more relaxed style of travel. This Cruise with Derek should feel particularly sociable too, as the entire ship has been taken over exclusively for the group, with only around 150 places available.

Life Onboard

What is there to do onboard MS Geoffrey Chaucer?

Life onboard is relaxed rather than packed with big-ship attractions. There's a panoramic lounge, Sun Deck with loungers and shaded areas, splash pool, putting green, fitness room, sauna and wellness facilities, alongside plenty of comfortable spaces to simply sit back and watch the scenery glide past.

What are evenings like onboard?

Evenings are relaxed and sociable, usually centred around the Panorama Lounge with drinks and live music. There can also be destination-inspired entertainment, and on this itinerary there's a live classical recital in Vienna and a Hungarian folklore show during the overnight stay in Budapest.

What is dining like onboard MS Geoffrey Chaucer?

Full-board dining is included throughout the cruise. The main restaurant offers open-seating dining with changing menus, while the smaller Bistro provides another more intimate dining option. There are no speciality dining surcharges to worry about.

What drinks are included on this cruise?

Riviera Travel includes a selection of drinks throughout the day, including wines, beers, spirits, soft drinks and hot beverages.

What are the suites like onboard?

All accommodation onboard MS Geoffrey Chaucer is suite-style, with hotel-style beds, marble bathrooms with walk-in showers, a Nespresso machine, mini-fridge, television and plenty of storage and seating space.

What is the dress code onboard?

The atmosphere onboard is smart but relaxed rather than overly formal. Comfortable casual clothing works well during the day, particularly for exploring ashore, while guests generally choose something a little smarter for dinner and the evening.

What plug sockets are available in the suites?

MS Geoffrey Chaucer is particularly well suited to British guests, with a UK three-pin socket available in the accommodation as well as European-style sockets, so you shouldn't need to rely entirely on travel adaptors.

Exploring Ashore

Do you have to join all 9 included destination experiences?

No. The 9 included destination experiences are there for guests who want to make the most of them, but there's no obligation to take part in everything. You can choose the experiences that appeal most and enjoy the cruise at a pace that suits you.

Is there still free time to explore independently?

Yes. The itinerary has been designed to balance guided experiences with time to explore independently and periods of relaxing scenic cruising. Several days specifically include free time after the organised visit.

Is this cruise suitable for guests who prefer less walking?

There are different styles of experience throughout the itinerary, including coach-based sightseeing and choices between more relaxed and more active options on selected days. Guests should still expect some walking in historic destinations, but joining every organised experience is not compulsory.

This Cruise with Derek

What makes this Cruise with Derek different from a normal Riviera Travel sailing?

We've taken over the entire MS Geoffrey Chaucer exclusively for Cruise with Derek. That means every guest onboard will be part of the group, with exclusive Cruise with Derek events and get-togethers planned throughout the week.

How many guests will be onboard?

There are only around 150 places available for this exclusive sailing, making it one of the most intimate Cruise with Derek adventures yet.

What Cruise with Derek events will take place during the cruise?

Exclusive Cruise with Derek events and get-togethers will take place onboard alongside the Riviera Travel itinerary. Full details will be announced closer to departure, with guests also able to get to know each other before travelling through the Cruise with Derek community.
